To cater to this wide array of requirements, engineers have developed numerous types of networks. However, even with this vast diversity, two types have remained the most popular and dominant, forming the foundation upon which most other networks are built. These two foundational categories are the Local Area Network (LAN) and the Wide Area Network (WAN), with most other network classifications being subtypes or hybrids of these two.

Defining the Local Area Network

The Role of the Physical Layer

In the conceptual models that govern computer networking, such as the widely-referenced Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, the very first layer is the Physical Layer. This layer is fundamental because it deals with the tangible, physical components of the network. It defines the specifications for all the hardware that makes a connection possible. This includes the cables, the connectors on the ends of those cables, the electrical voltages, and the radio frequencies that are used to transmit raw data as a series of ones and zeros (bits) from one device to another. For a Local Area Network, the physical layer is what you can see and touch: the cables running through the walls, the ports on your computer, and the central devices that tie everything together. Understanding Network Topologies

Physical Topology: Bus and Ring

In the early history of LANs, two physical topologies were common but are now considered legacy: bus and ring. The bus topology was the design used by early Ethernet (10BASE2). The Ethernet Frame
